Colonial Concert XLVII
November 28, 2026, 8:00 PM
United Church on the Green
On Saturday, November 28, we revisit Ye Olde Tymes with Colonial Concert XLVII, with our esteemed conductor, musicians, and soloists decked out in period finery.
The featured symphony on this historic-recreation concert will be the “just-arriving-in-the-New World” Mozart Symphony No. 35 (“Haffner”) which was composed in 1782; it is one of the greatest and most popular symphonies of the Classical Era.
Getting such a score and its performance materials to America took years of work. Everything required hand copying. In addition, the concert will include orchestral and vocal excerpts from plays and operas.
Our guest organist will play a masterpiece by JS Bach (who was no longer popular in the 1780s!) and the fabulous choral group Alchemy returns to close the concert with the grand music that concludes Handel’s ever-popular Messiah.
A festive pre-concert dinner will take place at 6pm at the Elm City Club, just across Elm Street.
Join the Maestro and Musicians for a reception downstairs in the meetinghouse after the concert.
About the Colonial Concert, a New Haven Holiday Tradition!
ONE's annual Colonial Concert features music that could have been presented in a concert in New Haven in 1786. Handel and Haydn were the most popular at the time. Mozart's music was brand new to the Colonies; the music of Johann Sebastian Bach was considered "old hat" and too complicated.
Concerts and recitals, which were rare at the time, were performed in the central meetinghouses; ONE chooses the historic United Church on the Green for it recreations. The local late-1700s newspapers admonished patrons "not to turn over benches" and "not enter or exit through the windows." That indication of historical rowdiness inspires ONE to include some amusement and surprises into our recreation of what it was like to hear an orchestra just after the American Revolution.
